AbstractWith the closure of the Landsat 5 satellite activities, many interests has been raised about finding a sensor with similar characteristics to the ones onboard Landsat series. In this context, the sensors onboard the IRS (Indian Remote Sensing) satellites emerged as an option. The aim of this study was to conduct a cross-comparison of equivalent bands from LISS-III (Linear Imaging Self Scanner III onboard ResourceSat-1) and TM (Thematic Mapper onboard Landsat 5) sensors. The comparison was made based on pixels located within forest stands. During 2010, a forest inventory and collection of GPS control points were performed in stands of Pinus elliotti aged 5-8 years. These served as a point of reference for the selection of samples inside images from the two sensors (scenes acquired with a difference of 17 days between them). Surface reflectance values were retrieved using the FLAASH (Fast Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercubes) module. Scatter plots with adjusted regression curves and coefficients of determination of the equivalent bands from the two sensors were generated to quantify the uncertainties and provide an evaluation of the differences between the sensors. The adjusted regressions pointed the medium infrared bands as those of greater similarity (r² = 0.90 and angular coefficient of 0.91) and green bands as having the lower similarity (r² = 0.67 and angular coefficient of 0.63).
